IVF Procedure Explained by Dr. Versha Jain, IVF Specialist

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is a ray of hope for many couples who are facing infertility challenges. As an IVF specialist, I, Dr. Versha Jain, understand the emotional and physical journey that each patient goes through. Over the years, I have helped numerous couples realize their dream of becoming parents, and I believe that a clear understanding of the IVF procedure is the first step in this journey.

Step-by-Step IVF Process

Ovarian Stimulation The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation. Typically, a woman’s body produces one egg per month, but for IVF, we need multiple eggs. To achieve this, I prescribe hormone injections that encourage the ovaries to produce several eggs. Regular ultrasounds and blood tests are done to monitor the ovaries' response and track the development of the eggs. This process takes around 10-14 days.

Egg Retrieval Once the eggs are mature, the next step is egg retrieval. This is done under light sedation to ensure comfort. Using a thin needle, I collect the eggs from the ovaries through the vaginal wall. This procedure takes about 20 minutes and is generally well tolerated by patients.

Fertilization The eggs are then combined with sperm in the laboratory. In some cases, where sperm quality is a concern, I may use a technique called ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg. This increases the chances of successful fertilization. The fertilized eggs are then carefully monitored for embryo development.

Embryo Culture The fertilized eggs, now embryos, are cultured for 3 to 5 days. During this time, we monitor their growth and development closely. The embryologist and I select the best-quality embryos for transfer. In some cases, we freeze extra embryos for future use.

Embryo Transfer The final step is the embryo transfer. This procedure is simple, painless, and takes only a few minutes. Using a thin catheter, I transfer the healthiest embryo(s) into the woman’s uterus. There’s no need for anesthesia, and most patients experience minimal discomfort. After the transfer, I advise patients to rest for a short period, but they can resume normal activities soon after.

Pregnancy Test and Follow-Up Around 10 to 14 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test is done to check for pregnancy. If the test is positive, we proceed with further monitoring to ensure that the pregnancy is progressing as expected.
